May Wildlife Rehabilitation Center summer wildlife presentation

Outdoor Recreation
Date: Thursday, August 17, 2017

Curious children and adults alike can now visit the May Wildlife Rehabilitation Center on the campus of Lees-McRae College Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 1 p.m. for its free summer wildlife presentation series.

The hour-long presentations feature Lees-McRae wildlife rehabilitation students teaching the importance of preserving and caring for North Carolina’s wildlife with the use of several animal ambassadors.

The ambassadors, ranging in species from owl to flying squirrel, remain at the center due to their permanent injuries and are therefore unable to return to the wild.

The MWRC kicked-off its summer wildlife presentation series Thursday, June 1, introducing many of the center’s ambassadors to anxiously awaiting visitors.

Students brought visitors up close and personal with Captain, a fellow Red-tailed Hawk, two Southern Flying Squirrels, named Zuri and Zulani, two Box Turtles, Tripod and Seymore, Sealy the Barred Owl and Thunder, a leucistic Eastern Grey Squirrel.

During the months of mid-August through November and February through April, visitors can enjoy wildlife presentations at the center on Saturdays at 1 p.m.

Though presentations are free of charge, donations are welcome. Visit the center on the campus of Lees-McRae at 367 Mill Pond Road in Banner Elk, North Carolina.
